Plus Size Body Types and Clothing Fit

I’m sure by now you have heard the different body types that apply to all women: Apple, Pear, Hourglass and Rectangular.  But how do these words, which translate into the shape of your body (chest plus middle plus hips plus lower), help you determine the best size and styles for you? Below is a list of the different body types and how they can aid you in style and proper fit.

Apple: Apples carry most of their weight around the middle. They are basically “apple shaped.” For the best fit and style, apples should go for horizontal necklines, which will help draw attention away from the middle. Avoid shoulder pads.  Wear straight tops to elongate your torso.

Pear: Like the fruit, pear shapes are larger at the bottom and smaller on top. The waist is generally smaller and defined and everything above the waist is more slender – including the neck, bust line, arms and shoulders. Wear shoulder pads to even your top to your bottom. Avoid fitted pants, instead go with dark colored pants and straight skirts.

Hourglass: Women with hourglass figures are even and proportionate. Their bust and waist are equal and they have a slimmer mid-line. Hourglass types look best in fashions that accentuate their curves. Belts are their best friend. Hourglass women are lucky and can get away with almost any fashion, as this is considered the “ideal” body type.

Rectangular: The opposite of hourglass, this body type has no definitive curves. Rectangular body types are straight up and down and have even proportions all the way around. If you have one of these body types, stay away from anything that makes the top or bottom look larger than the other. For example, shoulder pads will make you top heavy.

One last hint, no matter which body type you are, have a friend with you when you shop for clothing. They can help give a second opinion and an extra pair of eyes to judge what looks best on you.
