Plus Size Fashion Scandals

While the fashion world continues to design new and exciting styles to highlight a Plus Size Woman’s natural curves and vivacious body type, the world of runway modeling is still pulling up the rear.

With increasingly common stories showcasing that more and more designers are facing criticism and stubborn tradition on runways, the news that British Knitwear designer Mark Fast has once again had difficulty in gaining acceptance for his models showcases just how far the size-0 runway modeling world has to come.

Google News carried the story about Plus Size Women and the runway scandal:

Fast was at the centre of a dispute during London Fashion Week last September, when a stylist was forced to deny she stormed out of his catwalk show because he was using larger than normal models.

Among the models was Hayley Morley, a British size 12 (European size 40, US size 10) who returned with a plus-sized brunette to Fast’s show this year.

Many will scoff at the thought of a size 10 model being considered plus sized, but in the runway modeling world, anything other than a size 0 is often considered unacceptable.  The article did detail the fact that one department store that featured plus sized mannequins that more accurately reflected a real woman’s size.

Back in Britain, department store Debenhams won praise after it unveiled British size 16 mannequins in its shop windows on Thursday, for a limited time, to reflect that most women in the kingdom are a size 14 or 16.

“We are proud to offer a broad and varied choice for women of all ages, shapes and sizes in store. So we thought we should reflect this in our window displays,” Debenhams’ head of creative Mark Stevens said.

The fashions displayed were those that naturally accent Plus Sized women’s curves and body types, including a look that was less revealing than the cut-out knits popular last season and more accents on natural curves.  Tight dresses and a lot of detailing at the neck and hem with soft skirts predict this to be a fantastic year for Plus Size fashion.
